YOU HAVE THE FLU--- SUCK IT UP AND MOVE ON

Posted on: February 11, 2008 12:21 pm

Do you have a sore throat, runny nose, fever, body aches, a cough that sounds like it comes from your toes, and feel generally like a big steaming pile of........

Guess what, you most likely have the flu and it bites.  However unless you are old, very young, or have another chronic health condition and need to be admitted to a hospital there is very little that can be done.

Why the rant?  Over the past 3 shifts in the ER we have seen so many people with the flu I have lost count.  These folks on average have waited 2 hours to get back to a room only to be told that we can try to treat their symptoms but there is no cure.  I have be called every name in the book, I have been told where to go and how to get there, and I have been told just how stupid these folks think I am.  Meanwhile, as they sat in the waiting room coughing and blowing their noses they have infected numerous other people who will be back in a couple of days with the complaint of  "flu-like symptoms"

OK rant over I feel better.

Now drink your juice and go clean your room.  Oh yeah, call your Mom she misses you.

YOU HAVE THE FLU--- SUCK IT UP AND MOVE ON

This is quite a coincidence - this is something my sweet old Granny would've said!  Not really, it was my Mother!  I had the flu, got over it, but in its ravage through everything disgusting in my body, I also developed a bad sinus infection.  That you can help with, right?  If you have an "Urgent Care" center near you they can help and most are open 7-days/week.  They don't have the bureaucracy associated with a full blown hospital, and the really excessive waiting, and it frees up the hospitals for really bad emergencies.  Jes' sharing my experience so your sinuses don't explode!!  Good luck, and thanks for the humorous view, laurensmama!

YOU HAVE THE FLU--- SUCK IT UP AND MOVE ON

Last week, my daughter missed four days of kindergarten with the flu. Due to school rules (three or more missed days in a row), we were REQUIRED to take her to a physician this weekend to get a "doctor's note." Sure enough - all he could do was suggest Pedialyte, but at least she's back in school this week.

I can't speak for all of the ER-cloggers, but sometimes we don't have a choice - especially on the weekends when the pediatric offices are closed.

Please bear with your fellow parents!

YOU HAVE THE FLU--- SUCK IT UP AND MOVE ON

I always ran into the same problem as Badger while I was in high school. I'd get sick, miss 2 or 3 days of school, then they'd want a doctor's note. I knew there was nothing they could do for me other than write me the note, but I had to go anyway. Now that I'm in college I can miss class and not worry about the note. It's nice. Been sick for a week now and not planning on going to the doctor until at least this weekend and only if it isn't seeming to get better.

I hate the people who don't understand that a cold or the flu can't be treated too. Keep up your hard work and listen to what those people would ever say if you'd actually help save their, or one of their loved ones lives.

YOU HAVE THE FLU--- SUCK IT UP AND MOVE ON

Lauren really hates Pedialyte, but we found Gatorade to work well. Does the same thing and tastes a lot better. I tried the Pedialyte and it was one of the most disgusting things I ever tasted.

LM really is compassionate, even with the cold/flu/runny nose crowd, but it's amazing at the treatment she gets from some of her patients. She really does get screamed at, cursed at, spit at, swung at, and physically threatened all because she can't cure the flu. Last night she was called a "stupid f&^$(^# b(#&%" because she told somebody they had the flu and they had to ride it out because no medicine would help it go away faster, just take Tylenol to ease the symptoms. These are her customers coming into her place of work, demanding service, and treating her like dogmeat. Oh yeah, and telling her that they're not going to pay the bill anyway.

Can you imagine going to a restaurant and telling the waiter, "Hey *&$&%*$, get out here with my *$#%&% steak, you moron. And I want it for free, %*((&*$&^, or I'll kneecap you, stupid ((*$&#$^##$."? Day in the life for LM.
